What is a Registrar?

A registrar is the party responsible for providing the services required to add, manage, delete, renew, and provide whois services on behalf of a domain registry - whether this be an RSC for TLDs, or a domain registrar providing registration services for SLDs under various TLDs.

Registrars may be contracted, third party service providers of registration systems and services or may in fact be a part of the business operations of the domain registry itself. Most registrars provide a publicly available, web-based interface to support domain registration services, although some, as in the case of the registrar for the .AQ (Antarctica) TLD, only support unautomated, manual registration services via email or phone.
